GB Day 35

GB Day 35:

East of Lill-Aigert - North of Servvejávrrie

Via Peak of Lill-Aigert, Serve

Friday 13 August 2021

Woke up to a lovely sunny morning, probably one of the prettiest so far. We snoozed the alarm a few times though before getting out of bed, to have breakfast in the sun outside of our tent.

When we finally got going we just came a few hundred metres before meeting Annelise, and stopped to talk to her for a little while before moving on. We made our way up the little mountain "pass", removed our backpacks and climbed the little peak of Lill-Aigert. At the top we found a geocache, which is why we decided to take the little detour. After that, we both walked on with great speed. A few km ahead, we had a feeling there could be a privy by the Juovvatjåhkka shelter, so it was worth hurrying for! We happened to be right, and after a little stop there we could finally move on in a more normal and comfortable pace.

By the jokk close to the next shelter - Vuomatjåhkka, we decided to have lunch. When we were in the middle of doing the dishes afterwards, Kim looked up at the trail and thought she recognised someone. After some thought she waved at him, and she was right! It was Constantin, whom we follow on Instagram. He started walking from Munich in April, and has walked a little bit along Via Suecia - which, as mentioned before, Kim plans to do too. We had a long and nice talk beside the little creek, not only about hiking, gear and food, but also about future travel plans.

Finally, we had to stop because we were all just halfway for the day, and the clock was after four in the afternoon. So we set out again. This time it didn't take long until we suddenly stared straight onto a big reindeer with huge horns.

We then descended into the forest - actually nice here, and saw a ptarmigan up close again. And then, suddenly, Kim jumped as a reindeer ran out from the forest maybe 10 metres ahead. It was really cool. Other than those, we saw some more reindeer today as well.

When we reached the Serve cabins we took a toilet break. While sitting down on some benches outside, Lukas noticed an odd smell. After a while he thought that it could be the gas canisters, so he walked over to them and heard them leaking. He of course went straight to the cabin hosts to notify them of the problem before continuing. Over another pass, that Kim felt like it would never end, and down the other side. By the bridge we put up our tent for the night, and did a quick and easy wash before going to bed.
