We found out after our hike that we made a mistake! You are not allowed to camp or leave the trail in Malla Strict Nature Reserve. We didn’t know this beforehand, so please take that into consideration when you’re there.

Day 24: Monday 10 July 2023

Kilpisjärvi-Mallajávri

We woke up late in the little hut.

We had a few goals for the day: eat up our food and the ice cream, check out before twelve, buy food and finish writing our blog posts.

Which we did.

After checking out we went to the store to buy food and repack it. There was no shelter from the sun and no wind, so it was absolutely horrible. The chocolate of course melted faster than we managed to repack the other food.

Next up was writing the blog posts, so we went to the restaurant where we could sit inside, wrote blog posts and charged our phones. We also ate a hamburger and a pizza. This place just has amaaazing food.

Then it was time to go. We road walked to Kilpisjärvi Retkeylykesus where we had a break, ate a bun and drank a Smurf soda.

We also found two geocaches today.

We continued, and came to the parking lot where most people start there hike to the Three Country Cairn. Here the mosquitoes got worse, and we kept going. But it just got worse and worse and Kim started to panic, and had to put on mosquito protection even though it was really warm.

We continued up on the mountain while listening to a podcast. After some time we found a small lake to put up camp beside. Lukas swam again and Kim splashed herself clean, before running back to the tent to hide from the mosquitoes.
