NPL Day 106
Day 106: Saturday 30 September 2023
Bossbu-Øyuvsbu via Svartenut
We started the day with a really cozy morning in the hut that was still warm from yesterday. We also had a nice breakfast with sandwiches instead of our trusty “granola with milk”-breakfast that we were a bit tired of by now.
The weather today was really windy. Like yesterday evening, but… worse. Not so much rain though, which was nice. It was mostly just very humid, almost like fog in the air. The wind was so bad that when you put your face against the wind it was hard to breathe, but luckily we weren’t walking straight towards the wind for the majority of the day.
The terrain was also not great. During the entire day we had maybe 1-2 km of good trail, the rest was muddy and slippery, or rocky.
At one point during the day, Lukas called Kim over because he saw a lemming sitting by a rock. Actually sitting - not running like you usually see them! Kim came over and managed to see it too. It started running away, and ran back and forth in front of Lukas’ feet a few times, before hiding behind a rock. That is the longest time we have ever seen a lemming before, and we got a really good view of it too! Very special experience, and it was so cute!
When we reached the Svartenut hut, Lukas went ahead before Kim, as Kim wanted to try to take a geocache. Unfortunately though, it was lying under some rocks on top of a much bigger rock, and even with another rock as a chair to gain some height, there was no way she could reach it. If she had just been sliiightly taller she would have made it, and for Lukas it would have been so easy. So she was super frustrated that he had to run ahead to go to the toilet. Normally, taking this one with his help would not have been a problem.
So she gave up and went to the hut to take a short break. In there, she met three people whom she talked to. When Lukas showed up we had some cookies to snack on, then kept going.
Not much happened the rest of the day, except more bad trails. At one point Kim even sank to her knee in the mud, and almost didn't make it up.
Finally we came to the hut where we had planned to stay the night - Øyuvsbu. There was a lot of people there, maybe not too surprising since it was like one km from a road, but we were still a bit surprised. There we immediately made ourselves some food, and Kim had bought Lapper in the store earlier, and could now prepare them. After eating we managed to play on game of chess - ever since we played chess the first time we had looked for another hut with chess in it, and this was our first so of course we had to play! We were really tired though. Kim won the game, and then we went straight to bed.
