TA Day 13
TA Day 13: Tuesday 31 December 2024
Mavora Lakes Campsite - northeast of Boundary Hut
Trying to sleep in, on a campground with young families and lots of people is a bad idea. The first motorbike started driving around the area 7:30.
So we got up, and had our breakfast in the sun before packning everything together. Apparently we had also caught up with the two Canadian girls that had been our neighbours in The Anau, and now as well.
Despite the crazy long day yesterday, we felt quite good this morning. We started with 10 km of fairly easy walking along a 4WD-track that was mostly good. The sad/annoying part was all the cars, ATVs and motor cross bikes that passed us during our walk.
Luckily it got better once we passed Careys Hut. There was still a 4WD-track to follow, but almost no vehicles at all. And after the next hut after that, Boundary Hut (which we never walked to and peeked inside, we took a shortcut), we passed a bridge and then there were no more vehicles coming. Yay!
Here, just after the bridge, we also met another SOBO from whom we got some information about the trail and what to expect up ahead. Actually a lot of good things to know so we were happy about that.
We walked a bit longer, then decided to pitch our tent instead of going to Taipo Hut. This was the first night to pitch our tent "in the wild" (i.e. not at a campsite). Probably an "illegal" camp spot though so nothing we'd recommend others to do.
While doing this, Kim saw something on a rock that ran off, that looked very much like a lizard. Do they even have lizards here?
Today was also the last day of the year! We were tired so we went to bed early, but we sat an alarm just before midnight so we would wake up and could celebrate somehow.
At 23:55 we woke up (it took Kim like 20 minutes to properly wake up though...), said Happy New Year, briefly looked out, sent out a Happy New Year-message on the inReach and fell back asleep.
Today's:
Distance: 20.15 km
Ascent: 317 m
Descent: 286 m
Tent nights: 6/13
Weather: Sunny
