GB Day 63

GB Day 63:

North of Ösjövålen - Vättafjället

Via Fjällnäs, Hamra

Friday 10 September 2021

Today Lukas woke up by the canvas of the tent seemingly blowing around. His first thought was that a tent stake had come loose from the ground, so he turned around, probably bumping into Kim in the process, which woke her up too. At the same time something hit him in his head. Then he realised that there was an animal on the other side of the tent, and he could see the shape of it through the canvas. Meanwhile, many thoughts ran through Kim's sleepy mind. It's really windy? There is a small animal running in the abside? And as Lukas yelled "GET AWAY!", her mind raced... A bear!?

Lukas, who had kinda realised what was going on, lashed out with his fist and hit something soft. It was a reindeer muffle (before, it had hit Lukas with it's cloven hoof)! The reindeer disappeared now, and Lukas told Kim he just hit a reindeer in the face. Then we both stuck our heads out of the tent and saw a white reindeer in the distance.

What. The. Heck?

We were now wide awake, so we got up, packed our tent and continued to Långbrottsstugan where we met up with Helena and Jonas again to have breakfast, hung up our damp clothes and told them about the crazy awakening.

We then continued to walk the rest of the way to Fjällnäs with them, which made the time pass really quickly, and was a nice break from previous days. We also got to see another lemming! And this time properly as well.

In Fjällnäs we walked separate ways as Helena and Jonas stopped there to sleep inside, while we continued to the store Hamra Livs where we took a long break from hiking. We had a salad each, a sandwich and a smoothie, called Kim's mum and Viktor, and also bought food for the very last days of Gröna Bandet. Crazy!

We also had some nice ice cream.

Lukas was a bit bitter though, because as always, we didn't get going in time and Kim was so damn slow.

But finally we got going. We took a geocache in Hamra, threw the recycling and then started the tough walk up the ski slope in the fog. It worked fine walking in the fog though, and finally at the top of Vättafjället the terrain was muddy at first, but then got easier. While walking in the fog we joked that anyone could pitch their tent here and that we would literally have no clue if they had.

Then we continued, filled our bottles with water, and suddenly, Kim is pointing at a big rock... And suddenly we both realise there's a tent. It's not a stone in the fog. It's a tent!

We continued our hike along Vättafjället, and soon had to put on our headlights because the sun had gone down. We walked for a little while in the dark, then we decided that we should just pitch our tent there. 10 km (exactly) since we left the store.
