NPL Day 40 & GB Day 16

Day 40: Wednesday 26 July 2023

Gáhpesluoppal-Ny-Sulitjelma Fjellstue via Stáddájåhkå, Sorjusjaurestugan & Sorjushytta

Today we woke up and got ready in an usually good time, then we walked the short distance to Stáddájåhkå where we had breakfast.

After the breakfast we walked over to the cabin hosts hut because we wanted to tell them the message from Anna-Karin whom we met the day before. We did, and they seemed happy to hear from their friend. After that, we talked for a really long time, mostly about hiking, of course. We were also lucky that Antonella had just baked bread, so we could buy bread and Snickers 😍

Then it was time to continue. A few km later, a hiker caught up to us and then continued, he didn't say much. Around the same time we met a huuuge Swedish family who had flown to Sorjus with helicopter. Grandparents, parents and a lot of kids, all hiking together. It seemed like a really nice way to spend time together, and they seemed like a happy and friendly bunch of people. Some of the kids were curious about our long hike and asked some questions.

Then they had to continue. The grandma had continued while the others had stopped to talk to us, and now they needed to catch up.

We also had to continue.

We soon reached their "base camp" beside Sorjusjaurestugan, and it looked very interesting with so many tents along the lake shore, in varying colours and sizes.

The whole place was beautiful, and we understood why we had heard the place being called the most beautiful location of all the Swedish huts.

Kim peeked inside the tiny hut, while Lukas refilled water and sat down to have some spoon chips. Not long after, Kim also joined.

From here on we had wet shoes. There were no planks and a lot of water. We passed the border to Norway and was welcomed by the amazing mountains. We passed a jokk close to the lake where the bridge was broken, luckily we knew about it because we had been told before, which meant we didn't have to take the detour to the bridge, but could just walk straight across.

Not long after crossing the water we met more hikers, two young women from Belgien, walking the Nordkalottruta.

We continued on our way - walking and talking for a long time. Finally we reached Sorjushytta. What a beautiful place! Lukas went for a swim in the ice cold water 🥶 and we ate some snacks. Then the man that had passed us earlier showed up again. Apparently he hadn't known about the broken bridge so that's how we passed him without seeing him. He told us that he had lost his sleeping pad 😱 So he couldn't really sleep in his tent anymore but had to walk between the huts...

We gave him some Pringles, then continued up the rocky and snowy mountain. Our pulses were sky high, but the view was amazing. We stopped many times and enjoyed the view.

Then it was time to descend... It was really steep and tough for our knees, but finally we reached Ny-Sulitjelma Fjellstue. There was nowhere to put up our tents anywhere around here, it was too steep everywhere and quite rocky. So we decided to sleep inside. In there we met a nice Norwegian man with a dog, whom we talked to and who gave us beer 🍻
