Day 2 off trail - Rangitoto Island (Auckland) and drive to Cambridge

Today we got up and had to hurry to check out of our hotel because we realised that it would take some time to drive, park and be in time for the Rangitoto boat.

Our main goal today was, surprise, surprise - geocaching!

But it was also to just spend time on a volcanic island. Apparently this island didn’t even exist when the Maori came here. Sometime during the 15th Century it erupted, and according to signs along the walkways on the island, footprints in the volcanic ash on the nearby island Motutapu Island shows that there was Maori around the time of the eruption.

During the Second World War the island was used by the military.

It was an intensive day with lots of geocaching before we caught the last boat back, and started our drive south. We decided to stay the next night in Cambridge, where we booked a cabin at the holiday park there.
