NPL Day 56 & GB Day 32

Day 56: Friday 11 August 2023

This morning we were supposed to go up early but we were very tired so we overslept. The tent was a bit wet because there had been a little bit of a drizzle so we had to separate the tent before going.

When we started hiking we realised how close to the trail we were but we hadn't realised it yesterday evening...

In the beginning the trail was very muddy, but after a few km we got planks, then we reached a nice bridge where we sat down to have breakfast. It was really nice to have breakfast and we were both very hungry. After eating we continued over to the second bridge and we started to go off trail. Now we were really in Børgefjell, and we had decided to follow Frida's path instead of the one we had first planned, which the E1 route suggests.

First there was still a path, so we followed it until we lost it in a bog. So we continued on our own through all the bushes and the bogs. After some time we started to make our way upwards and we decided to not go around the mountain (Jillie Bienjere) as we first had meant to do but rather go up and across it.

The whole day we had issues with the rain. It couldn't make up it's mind so it was hard to dress. Too much drizzle to not wear a rain jacket, then just a few minutes with it on, then it was too warm and we had to take it off. And like that it went, pretty much the whole day.

There were also reindeer everywhere and they were very curious about us, running back and forth around us, staring at us from a distance.

It was a very good decision to go over the mountain as the terrain was much easier to walk in and we could see very far. Kim thought it was very heavy today and everything went very slow, but when we looked at the distance and time later in the evening, we saw that it wasn't so slow after all. In 9 hours we hiked over 20 kilometers and also off trail which is quite good, usually we hike for 12 hours on trail and don't go much further than that.

Finally we decided to pitch the tent. In that moment some proper rain and also wind came, and we had to hurry like crazy. The ground was not very easy to put tent stakes in but finally we managed to put the tent up and could hide inside it. While Lukas went for a swim, Kim fixed everything inside the tent and made food. Then it was time to go to bed.
