TA Day 42

TA Day 42: Wednesday 29 January 2025

Boyle Village - Anne River / East of Discovery Peak

Lukas wanted to stay in bed when the alarm rang, but we had to get up. We were quite slow today, but at 10 we had at least left the cottage. We never got company from other hikers - actually we didn't see any other TA hikers at all. Maybe everyone hitchhikes to Hanmer Springs?

We sat down outside on a bench, and put on some extra sandfly protection as we finished our internet chores. The sandflies were crazy which stressed us a little bit.

But at least the trail was good, once we were finally off. We listened to podcasts again which we haven't done in a long time because we've almost always been around other people.

The forest gradually changed the longer up the valley we came. We went over a saddle that we barely noticed, and we had a little bit of a drizzle throughout the day, so Kim was wearing her poncho on and off. Lukas wasn't wearing his rain jacket, which worked most of the way because it was so warm, but after the saddle he had to put it on.

We were discussing if we should go all the way to the hut and arrive late, or just pitch the tent somewhere, and soon. We ended up going with the second option, and after removing some bird poo (there are so many Canada geese here!) we pitched the tent and went for a quick dip in the nearby river. Even Kim went in!

Today's:

Distance: 27.52 km

Ascent: 1063 m

Descent: 730 m

Tent nights: 29/42

Weather: Cloudy, drizzle and rain
