TA Day 54

TA Day 54: Monday 10 February 2025

Rocks Hut - Pelorus Bridge (Totara Flats Picnic Area)

Today was the last day in the Richmond's. Crazy! But nice too because now we really want to go to Havelock to eat.

We started the morning with some breakfast in the hut - of course we left the hut last of all as usual.

Going down to Middy Hut was slow, and the sandflies were crazy here, so we tried to make it quick. Lukas felt really tired and just wanted to be done with this section. Kim shared his feelings.

We kept moving, on towards the next hut, Captain's Creek Hut, were we had lunch in the company of plenty of sandflies. Lukas also went for a swim here.

We didn't feel so good, and it felt like the trail was never getting faster, but the thought of food fuelled us on.

At Emerald Pools we stopped again for a swim break, and here there was literally a black cloud of sandflies around us, even when we went in the water. The pools were beautiful and the water temperature perfect. But we didn't stop for long, the sandflies were driving Kim crazy. We finished our last snacks and continued.

Now the trail finally improved and soon we reached the gravel road! Yes!

Kim brought forth an almond chocolate bar that she had saved to celebrate this moment with, and we devoured it hungrily.

We put on some podcasts and started the long road walk to Pelorus Bridge. It felt like it took forever, but we reached our camp spot just as the sun had set and it was getting dark.

Lukas went for a swim once more and Kim made dinner, then it was time to go to bed.

Today's:

Distance: 33.49 km

Ascent: 896 m

Descent: 1689 m

Tent nights: 36/54

Weather: Sunny, but a super quick drizzle in the afternoon, then sunny again
