TA Day 85 (off trail)

TA Day 85: Thursday 13 March 2025

Day 4 off trail - Drove from Cambridge to Rotorua and visited Redwoods – Whakarewarewa Forest

Today it was time to move on to the next place. We left Cambridge and drove to Rotorua, and on the way there we of course stopped for some geocaches, one of them beside some funny sheep statues. Also a Jesus statue but we didn’t take any pictures of that.

Next stop was Redwoods, where we had first planned to walk on some walkways that were between 10-20 m up, but when we found out the price we weren’t that interested anymore. Pretty much the same as a Swedish höghöjdsbana but less fun. And similarly priced. No thanks.

Instead we took a walk among the huge Redwood trees, and geocached as well as just mesmerised took in the size of the huge trees.

After the walk we headed to our accommodation for the night - Kiwi As Guest House, a hostel with a bunk bed, a double bed and a private toilet in an old house with a shared kitchen. A charming place that was also centrally located, so everything was within walking distance.

We crashed on the sofa in the shared living room, while Kim’s parents went out to find some geocaches and see the town.

What felt like very soon, they were back, and now it was suddenly stressful. We went over to the fast food shop next door and got fries and fried chicken for dinner, and meanwhile quickly packed our things for tonight.

Then off we went, walking to the pick-up point for our evening activity, which was an evening kayak tour to see glow worms. We had initially planned to go to Waitomo Caves to see glow worms, but a last minute decision made us do this instead. And it was nice, so we didn’t regret it. Easy paddling, very tranquil and informative and also relaxing!

We don’t have any photos from this, as cameras weren’t allowed as “glow worms don’t like them”. Either way, there wouldn’t have been any good pictures in the dark anyway, so 🤷
